We went a bit further afield today to the Newbridge Inn in Tredunnock, near Usk (map). The Newbridge Inn is a pub / restaurant and hotel owned by Chris Evans of Radio and TV fame. The head-chef is Iain Sampson. We had booked for lunch, but there wasn’t any need as it was very quiet. It’s in an ideal location right next to a wonderful bridge over the River Usk.
Even though the Inn is right down on the river the views are superb. As you can see from the photos the weather was great as well. Because it was quiet we managed to get a table with a great view across the river. The food was excellent – all freshly cooked. The steak sandwich was full of succulent Welsh sirloin. I had a plate of smoked salmon with shallot onions and capers which was also very good. Though I’d have struggled for a veggie choice if I hadn’t been a fish eater!
The best part for me were the desserts – we had to wait a little while while they were prepared but it was worth the wait. We had a wonderful Pear Hélène Pancetta and a Hot Chocolate Mousse. Both were excellent.
The bill came to £78 for 3 including service for 2 courses and drinks. A little expensive for lunch but well worth it.
The Inn also has some rooms which look good.
Well worth a visit. Thoroughly recommended!
Update 13th August 2008: half of all profits from Chris’s pubs go to local children’s charities so your money is going to a good cause as well!!!!
Update 27th September 2010: apparently Chris Evans has sold the pub to the Celtic Manor Resort. They intend to use it as an alternative venue for weddings. Suggest you phone the pub for more information if you intend to lunch there.
